How to File a VAT Return in QuickBooks
Filing a VAT return can seem daunting, but with QuickBooks, the process is streamlined and straightforward. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you file your VAT return with ease.
Step 1: Prepare Your VAT Return
- Ensure Accuracy: Before you start, make sure all your accounting data for the VAT period is accurate and up-to-date. Reconcile your bank accounts to avoid discrepancies.
- Navigate to VAT: In QuickBooks, go to the Taxes tab and select VAT.
- Review Details: Click on Prepare return. Check the dates in the From Date and To Date fields to ensure they cover the correct VAT period
Step 2: Review Your VAT Figures
- Check Transactions: Review all transactions to ensure they are correctly categorized and that VAT has been applied where necessary.
- Adjust if Needed: If you need to make any adjustments, click on Adjust next to the relevant line item
Step 3: Submit Your VAT Return
- Connect to HMRC: If you’re using Making Tax Digital (MTD), ensure QuickBooks is connected to HMRC. Go to Taxes, select VAT, and follow the prompts to connect
- File Online: Once everything is reviewed and accurate, click File online with HMRC. Confirm the details and submit your return
Step 4: Record Your VAT Payment
- Record Payment: After filing, record your VAT payment in QuickBooks to keep your VAT payable up-to-date. Go to Taxes, select VAT, and then Record payment
- Check Status: Verify the status of your VAT return on the HMRC website to ensure it has been successfully submitted
